Kris Urquides
Kris Urquides is the singer/guitar player for Monolith from Perris, California and has had a passion for music his whole life. All the greats of every music genre have always and still continue to be his inspiration for music today; along with many other things such as art, movies and books. After piano lessons at a young age, he decided he’d much rather play guitar instead and has loved it ever since. He picked up a guitar at the age of eight and seriously started playing lots of classic hard rock such as Van Halen and Led Zeppelin at the age of 13. When Kris was a freshman in high school, he wanted to form a band and be just like his heroes. After forming his band, they played a few shows before coming up with the name that would make them known, Monolith; which happens to be the street name Kris lives on and where the band was formed. Singing didn’t come easy to Kris; however, after listening to vocalists such as James Hetfield, Jimmy Hendrix and Bruce Dickenson, he broke the nerves and started singing for the band he helped start. He is constantly trying to create and improve his own style of playing - believing that rhythm is somewhat of a lost art by trying to bring back and play a good, solid, truly well constructed rhythm section that will hold up the song. He is always changing and trying to make his own style of soloing with blues, rock and metal with some of his own technique to make it his own style of playing. Kris says he will always love playing live the most:
“Playing live is one of the greatest feelings for me. Just the feeling of total expressionism and letting out what you do and just going for it. Especially when you got all the guys together and everyone is in sync jamming together making one great sound, nothing beats it (laughs) Oh, plus theres a great audience you feel the energy from and you can feed on it.”
At the age of 19, after lots of dedication and hard work with the band, he was able to go on his first tour traveling across the entire western half of the United States. He learned many things along the way while gathering what will someday be a wealth of stories just like all the other great bands he’s heard and read all about when they were his age. Having an all around love and almost addiction for sound of any kind, Kris has found a passion for audio engineering. He has already started on this passion by recording local bands in his area and will be recording his own band’s upcoming cd. He hopes to record great artists and make truly sonic albums.
